THE MURMURATION THERAPY GARDEN
London
A hospital garden in London for a neurorehabilitation unit, winner in its category at the 2021 Society of Garden Designers Awards
This garden was inspired by starling murmurations – a phenomenon in nature which is similar to the way human cells move around the body. The grace, ease and fluidity a murmuration evokes felt fitting for a garden designed to inspire a feeling of freedom for its users.
This garden provides a space where hospital patients can receive the therapeutic benefits of gardening and being surrounded by nature. It is designed to be accessible to all with wide curved paths providing easy access for wheelchair uses. The raised beds where food can be grown, are arranged at different heights to allow for use sitting, kneeling or standing. Group activities can be lead here or under the shaded pergola. There are also multiple seating options to allow patients to easily socialise and spend time with visitors.
