LEIGH-ON-SEA GARDEN DESIGN

Essex

A family garden inspired by its coastal setting with rainwater harvesting and wildlife at its heart.

The material palette for this garden reflects that of the local area with flint gravel and reclaimed maritime timber echoing the pebble beaches and sea-weathered wooden structures visible on the coastline nearby.

The garden is fed by rainwater which is harvested from the roof and then channelled in a flowing stream meandering down the garden to a wildlife pond at the end. This irrigates the garden using a sustainable water source, but also adds sound and movement, as well as an important source of water for wildlife. A cantilever deck made from reclaimed maritime timber provides a viewing platform where kids can dangle their feet over the side and observe the wild pond inhabitants.

At the end of the garden, a further seating area, surrounded by multi-stem trees and woodland planting provides a space to sit in the evening, warmed by the chimenea. Log piles and a stumpery have been added amongst the planting to provide a home for insects, as well as

A coastal-inspired front garden

The front garden is a pollinator- friendly gravel garden inspired by wild coastal plant communities local to the area. A winding path through the soft, ethereal planting provides a moment to slow down and connect to nature, before entering the house as well as a spot to sit and enjoy being immersed in colour and scent on a summer’s evening.
