GODALMING GARDEN DESIGN

Surrey

A wildlife-friendly family garden which draws inspiration from the house.

The brief for this garden was for an informal family-friendly space with naturalistic planting that would invite wildlife in, as well as provide privacy.  The design centres around soft, curved planting beds which contrast to rectilinear clay brickwork, complementing the architecture of the house. The front garden was transformed from a drab lawn into a low- input, drought - tolerant gravel garden with mediterranean planting and ethereal grasses. The planting frames the pathway and architecture, creating a soft, welcoming entrance and a sense of arrival which enhances the house.

Connecting to the seasons

The back garden is now a private oasis, with multi-stem trees providing screening and structural interest as well as emphasising the changing seasons with berries and blossom. A clover lawn was added to provide play space for the kids, whilst also being a source of food for pollinators. The planting beds are a mixture of ornamental grasses and perennials which are a changing tapestry of colour and texture, attracting pollinators and creating habitat space for wildlife.
