GUILDFORD GARDEN DESIGN
Surrey
A garden inspired by its historic setting.
This garden already contained plenty of hints to its 17th century origins, with an original Bargate stone wall and stable yard cobbles. The design was approached with sensitivity usingusing reclaimed York stone to create a terrace and paths - a material that would complement the historic context, whilst improving usability. The hardscape has been softened with planting pockets of Erigeron (a gently self-seeding daisy) which will quickly give the sense of something that has been there for many years, as well as enhancing a serene spot for outdoor dining.
This garden was designed whilst working as part of Rigden Saunders Ltd 2019 – 2024
Edibles and Ornamentals
Space to grow edibles was a key part of the brief and so herbs have been combined with ornamentals in a sunny spot next to the terrace – the perfect position for gathering to add to cooking. Further away from the house, a kitchen garden, with raised beds and a nearby compost area, provides an easily maintainable space to grow vegetables. The path down the garden has been re-paved with York stone to improve accessibility and connected to other destination points – a new summerhouse, and a bench which provide spots to sit and take in the countryside views.
The boundaries of the garden have been softened with undulating bulb meadows either side of the garden, which merge into native meadow at the end of the garden. These areas will provide habitat for wildlife and connect the garden visually with the countryside beyond.
