THAMES DITTON GARDEN
Surrey
A design for a family garden in Thames Ditton, inspired by the backdrop of a Victorian viaduct.
Between the wild and the weathered
The most prominent feature on visiting this garden for the first time, was the huge Victorian viaduct that formed the backdrop to the space. Its weathered architecture inspired the garden’s material palette, but it was important not to compete with it. Instead, the design softens and complements the structure, allowing it to remain the star while the garden offers a gentler counterpoint. Hard landscaping was kept simple and understated, with the planting taking centre stage.
Multi-stem trees were placed to soften the boundaries and merge seamlessly into the semi-natural scrubland beyond. A tapestry of soft ornamental grasses and woodland ferns evokes the untamed character of the surrounding landscape, while a wildflower lawn offers an open space for children to play.
